- The history of Chunar Fort is very ancient. According to some legends, it is also associated with mythological rulers like King Vikramaditya or King Bali, although historical evidence is mainly available from the 16th century.

- In the 18th century, the fort remained under the Nawab of Awadh, but in 1763–64, the British took it under their control and used it as a military cantonment, prison and ammunition depot.
