Lonavala Railway Station Guide: Location, Facilities & Tips

Lonavala Railway Station

Lonavala Railway Station is your first real introduction to the hill station. And first impressions matter.

I’ve been writing about Indian travel for 10 years. Gateways to tourist towns usually disappoint, overcrowded, understaffed, designed to process people rather than welcome them. Lonavala Railway Station surprised me. Not dramatically. But enough to notice.

Overview of Lonavala Railway Station

Lonavala Railway Station sits on the Central Railway line between Mumbai and Pune. It’s a Category B station, which in Indian Railways terms means mid-sized, reasonably maintained, with functional infrastructure.

The station handles a serious volume of weekend traffic. Mumbai locals treat Lonavala like a pressure valve. Every Friday evening and Saturday morning, the platforms fill with people carrying trekking shoes and expecting rain.

The station code is LNL. Remember that when you’re searching train schedules on IRCTC or Railyatri.

Location and map details

Lonavala Railway Station is on Station Road, right in the center of town. Walk out of the main exit and you’re 200 metres from the main market.

The address: Station Road, Lonavala, Maharashtra 410401.

Coordinates: 18.7481° N, 73.4072° E, if you’re navigating on Google Maps. Just search “Lonavala Railway Station” and it pulls up correctly.

The location is genuinely good. Hotels, food stalls, chikki shops, auto stands. All within a 5-minute walk. You don’t need a vehicle just to get your bearings after arriving.

Station timings and train schedule information

The station runs 24 hours. Trains pass through at odd hours and the booking office and basic facilities stay operational through the night.

Reservation counter hours: 8 AM to 8 PM on weekdays. Slightly reduced on Sundays.

Key trains that stop at Lonavala Railway Station:

  • Deccan Express (11007/11008): Mumbai CST to Pune. One of the oldest and most popular options. Stops at Lonavala around 10:30 AM from Mumbai.
  • Sinhagad Express (11009/11010): Departs Dadar, arrives Lonavala around 9:20 AM. Heavy weekend crowd.
  • Intercity Express (12123/12124): Fast option. About 1.5 hours from Pune.
  • Local EMU trains: Multiple daily departures from both Mumbai and Pune. Cheapest option. Takes around 2 to 2.5 hours from CST.

Weekend trains fill up fast. Book at least 2 to 3 weeks ahead on IRCTC if you want a reserved seat on Friday or Saturday departures. I learned this the hard way once, standing in the general compartment from Karjat to Lonavala with a backpack and no space to set it down.

Facilities available for travelers

The station has improved a lot in the last 5 years. Here’s what you’ll actually find:

Waiting rooms: Separate general and ladies’ waiting rooms on Platform 1. Clean enough. Seating fills up fast during peak hours.

Retiring rooms: Available for short stays. Book through the IRCTC website in advance. Useful if you’re catching an early morning train.

Food stalls: 4 to 5 stalls on the platform itself. Vada pav, chai, biscuits, packaged snacks. One proper canteen near the main entrance.

Toilets: Maintained. Not pristine, but functional. Paid facility on Platform 1, 5 rupees.

ATM: 1 SBI ATM inside the station premises. It ran out of cash when I visited on a Saturday afternoon. Withdraw before you arrive.

Cloak room: Yes, available. 30 rupees per bag for 24 hours. Helpful if you want to explore without dragging luggage.

Wi-Fi: RailWire free Wi-Fi is available. Works decently during off-peak hours. Unusable on Saturday evenings when 200 people are simultaneously streaming.

My personal review

I arrived on a Thursday morning on the Deccan Express. Platform 1 was calm. The station felt smaller than I expected from a town that gets this much tourist traffic.

What works: the central location is genuinely useful. I walked to my hotel in 8 minutes. The cloak room staff were helpful and efficient. The chai at the platform stall was good, strong, 10 rupees.

What doesn’t: the signage inside the station is inconsistent. Some boards in English, some only in Marathi. If you’re arriving for the first time, the exit to the auto stand isn’t obvious. You’ll probably walk the wrong way once before finding it (I did, and I’ve been here before).

The weekend crowd is a real thing. I’ve arrived on Saturday mornings and the atmosphere shifts completely. The platforms get loud, the autorickshaw drivers outside triple their aggression, and the chai stalls run out of cups. If you can travel on a weekday, the whole experience is calmer.

Lonavala Railway Station does its job. That’s an honest assessment after a decade of comparing train stations across India.

How to reach popular attractions from the station

Getting around from Lonavala Railway Station is easy. Autos and cabs wait right outside the main exit.

Bhushi Dam: 5 km. Auto costs around 80 to 100 rupees one way. 10 minutes.

Lonavala Lake: 2 km. Walk if the weather is good, or auto for 50 rupees.

Tiger’s Leap (Tiger Point): 11 km. Cab recommended, 200 to 250 rupees. Autos go but the road is steep.

Karla Caves: 12 km from the station. Shared jeeps leave from near the bus stand, 20 rupees. Or private cab for around 300 rupees.

Rajmachi Fort: 15 km by road to the Udhewadi base village. Jeeps available but check timing. Most trekkers leave by 7 AM.

Khandala: 3 km. Auto for 60 to 80 rupees. Or walk if you have time and the sky isn’t threatening rain.

Ola and Uber both work in Lonavala. Availability drops during peak weekend hours around the station. Pre-book if you’re arriving Friday evening.

Food options near the station

Within a 10-minute walk of Lonavala Railway Station, your options are genuinely good.

Maganlal Chikki: 5 minutes from the station on Station Road. The original. Every chikki shop in Lonavala claims to be authentic. This one has been here since 1910. Buy the plain peanut chikki, skip the flavoured ones.

Cooper’s Chikki and Fudge: 3 minutes from the exit. Also reliable. Better for chocolate fudge specifically.

Rama Krishna Hotel: Budget thali place, 100 metres from the station. Full veg thali for 120 rupees. Local crowd, fast service, no pretension.

Hotel Chandralok: Slightly nicer sit-down option. South Indian breakfast is solid. About 200 metres from the station.

Sagar Restaurant: Good for quick North Indian and Chinese. 400 metres, 5-minute walk.

The platform stalls are fine for chai and vada pav while you wait. Anything more substantial, walk out and spend 10 minutes.

Best hotels near Lonavala Railway Station

Walking distance options that are worth the money:

Hotel Adarsh (400 metres): Budget pick. Clean rooms, no frills, 800 to 1,200 rupees per night. The staff know the area well and will tell you which roads are flooded during monsoon, useful information.

Hotel Milan (600 metres): Mid-range. Better maintained than Adarsh. Rooms around 1,500 to 2,000 rupees. Small restaurant attached.

The Dukes Retreat (2 km): If you want proper comfort and a valley view. Rooms start around 4,500 rupees. The property is well kept and the distance from the station means it’s quieter.

Fariyas Resort (3 km): Popular for families and groups. Pool, garden, decent food. 6,000 to 8,000 rupees per night. Book well ahead for weekends.

Della Adventure & Resorts (4 km): Expensive but has its own entertainment complex. Good for groups who want activities built in. 10,000 rupees and up.

My recommendation: if you’re doing Lonavala on a budget, Hotel Milan gives you the best value close to Lonavala Railway Station. Worthwhile if you’re catching an early train back.

Visitor tips

A few things I wish someone had told me earlier:

Pack a rain jacket regardless of season. The ghats create their own weather. I’ve been rained on in March here.

Autos from the station will quote 30 to 40% above normal rates if you look like a tourist. Agree on the price before getting in. Standard rate to Bhushi Dam is 80 to 100 rupees, not 200.

The chikki sellers near the station exit are more expensive than the shops on Station Road proper. Walk 200 metres and you’ll pay less for the same stuff.

Train tickets back to Mumbai sell out by Saturday afternoon for Sunday departures. Book your return ticket the moment you confirm your arrival. Don’t leave it for Sunday morning.

The station has no proper left-luggage facility outside the cloak room. If you plan to check out of your hotel before your train, use the cloak room. It’s worth the 30 rupees.
